Paul's letter to the Romans is the Bible's most thorough explanation of Christian beliefs. It is the cornerstone for the historic Christian creeds. It is worthy of every Christian's careful study. Martin Luther considered it "the most important piece of the New Testament," and admonished Christians that it should be memorized word for word and studied daily. John Calvin said that if anyone gained an understanding of Romans, then he would have an entrance opened to "all the most hidden treasures of scripture." John Piper has said that Romans is "as solid and as durable and as reliable and unshakable and thorough as truth can get."
Starting at Chapter 1, Verse 1, every week, TGL will focus on a short passage (one to ten verses) from Romans. There will be one post per week until the entire Book has been covered. I anticipate working on the project for several years, at least.
I will be regularly consulting the works of Luther, Calvin, Piper and Karl Barth. So much has been written and said about Romans by so many great scholars that I don't hope to say anything completely original. My vision is to distill the best teaching already available into straightforward plain language posts that can be read in only a few minutes (250-300 words each). Some passages that are too rich in meaning to fairly discuss within the word limit will be covered in multiple consecutive posts.
I don't pretend to be a Bible scholar or theologian. I believe that for me this will be a journey of learning and discovery through the pages of the greatest letter ever written. I would be pleased and honored to have you join me.
